Y’all, I’m shocked by the amount of girls who asked me to write this blog post. Let me just start with this… I am not going to list out 10 products on Amazon your boyfriend might like. No. This blog post is about knowing your boyfriend well enough to give him the best surprise gift.

So ladies, let’s not fret anymore. I’m truly the gift-giving master–ask my boyfriend! Yeah, we’ve been dating for 7 years, but he’s been loving my gifts since Day 1.
First, let’s start with two questions you should ask yourself when buying your boyfriend a gift:
- What’s His Love Language?
- What Is He Talking About Mostly?
What’s His Love Language?
There are 5 love languages: quality time, acts of service, physical touch, words of affirmation, and receiving gifts. Knowing this will 100% lead you into the right direction on a gift for your boyfriend.
So what’s his love language?
Quality Time: Plan a day-long date where it’s just the two of you.
Acts of Service: Maybe this isn’t a gift in itself, but you can make his day extra special by taking any burdens or responsibilities off of him to fully enjoy his day.
Physical Touch: Do I really have to explain this one?
Words of Affirmation: Make sure you include a long love letter with any other surprise you have for the day.
Receiving Gifts: Gift shopping is probably going to be easy for someone who really just feels appreciated by gifts.
Most people have more than one love language, so you should mix and match the ideas above.
If you haven’t taken the Love Language test yet, I strongly advise you both to take it! It’ll not only make gift giving better but also communication.
What Is He Talking About Mostly?
I mean just listen to him!! Men drop hints just as much as we do, even if they don’t realize it.
Every gift I’ve ever given my boyfriend was a surprise yet something he actually wanted. I keep my ears peeled year-round and simply listen to him for ideas.
Pro tip: Giving expected gifts is BORING! Ask him what he wants and make him think that’s what you’re getting him. The truth is that he doesn’t really know what he wants, and he’ll appreciate your surprise gift so much more.
What Not To Gift Your Boyfriend
I incorporated my boyfriend’s opinion in the Don’ts section, so you know it’s for real.
Major Don’ts
- Don’t ask him what he wants for ideas because he doesn’t know.
- Don’t buy him something you want to benefit from in some way, unless he ACTUALLY wants it…like a nespresso machine. 😉
- Don’t buy him something that’s a starter kit to trying to change something about him. My best example is clothing. Sure, you want him to dress a certain way, so you buy him proper clothes. Wrongo. Don’t do it because you’ll suck.
These should be blatantly obvious, but I’m pretty sure most girlfriends out there do this.
